Team shows great sportsmanship after (another) scoring error
Another week, another scoring error… At least this time it ended in a heartwarming show of sportsmanship.
There was a judging mistake at American Cheer Power Grand Nationals (Ohio), in the Small Senior level 3 division. The winning team (Step One All Stars - Magnificent) recognized that a mistake had been made and that they wouldn't have won if the error hadn't been made.
They brought this up to the event producer (Varsity) and decided to give the team that would’ve won (Elite Heat All-Stars Rose Gold) their winner's jackets and banners! See the video here:
Remember that the team corrected this mistake, not the event producer… Looks like they haven’t learned from their mistakes yet:
Rain Athletics gym ruined by winds
The owner of Rain Athletics shared, in this beautifully written post, that their Pittsburgh gym has been ruined by strong winds:
Just as teams are getting ready for the final competitions of the season, it looks like they’re standing without a gym. This is absolutely devastating, and if there are any ways to help, we’ll share them with you!
Varsity agrees to pay $43.5 million to settle lawsuit
If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that we’ve reported on the Varsity & USASF lawsuits. (Read about the first one here & the second here.)
Major updates in both cases have happened this week!
The second lawsuit seems to have been dismissed (closed). Apparently, the judge wasn’t happy that those who filed the lawsuit didn’t follow the correct rules during the process of gathering information in the case. Read more here.
The first lawsuit, however, seems to have reached a settlement:
“Varsity Brands has agreed to pay $43.5 million to settle an antitrust lawsuit brought on behalf of a class of all-star cheerleading gyms, according to a copy of the agreement filed in the case.”
“The settlement deal, which still requires court approval, would bring to a final resolution one of three federal antitrust suits Varsity has been forced to defend over the last three years.”
It also brings up the “relationship“ between Varsity & the USASF:
“The other defendant in the case was the U.S. All Star Federation (USASF), the Varsity-backed cheerleading governing authority, which the plaintiffs had accused of being central to Varsity achieving “monopoly power” over the cheer market.”
“In addition to the settlement’s financial terms, Varsity and the USASF agreed to a list of conditions meant to curb what critics have said is Varsity’s improper influence over the cheer organization it founded in 2003. According to the deal the parties struck, current Varsity board members will no longer be able to simultaneously serve on the board for USASF, and Varsity cannot pay for the salaries or benefits of USASF employees and executives.”
