Athletes Like Maddy Brum Left Out of “NIL” Opportunities
“NIL” (Name, Image, and Likeness) refers to college athletes' rights to profit from their personal brand through things like sponsorships.
But cheerleaders like Maddy Brum are largely left out compared to other athletes - despite huge followings...
Here’s part of the article from Sportico:
“The most marketable athlete on the campus of Texas Tech has more than 427,000 followers on TikTok and 447,000 on Instagram.
She has starred in a popular streaming series, appeared on Dancing with the Stars and regularly performs before tens of thousands of fans on Saturdays at Jones AT&T Stadium.”
“This is supposed to be the new era in college athlete economic empowerment, when institutions of higher learning are supporting the financial prerogatives of their most physically gifted. But for Division I college cheerleaders like Maddy Brum—who boasts 120,000 more Instagram followers than star Texas quarterback Arch Manning—the big revolution has brought very little thus far.“

Park Middle School (Beckley, West Virginia) cheerleaders are fundraising to purchase mandatory practice mats:
